We are outraged and deeply disturbed by the events that continue to unfold in our communities, most recently in Los Angeles, where ICE and other federal agencies carried out aggressive enforcement actions that terrorized our communities. These raids have violated the dignity and human rights of workers and families, and continue to sow fear across neighborhoods where people simply seek to live and work in safety.
Our communities are retraumatized by the reports of people being detained, families being torn apart, and workers being targeted in their places of employment. Community leaders and attorneys for those previously detained report that some of the detained workers have been forced to go without food for 14 hours, cramped in small spaces, and women left without access to menstrual hygiene products. We unequivocally condemn the inhumane and degrading treatment of detained individuals who have been deprived of basic necessities. No institution should subject people to conditions that violate human rights standards and basic decency.
We call for the immediate release of individuals unjustly detained by ICE, and demand that all immigration proceedings uphold the principles of due process and human rights. No one should be held without fair and timely legal recourse.
Among those detained in Friday’s raids was President of SEIU California and SEIU-USWW David Huerta, while advocating for the rights of immigrant workers. We demand the immediate release of David Huerta and an end to the unjust arrest of peaceful protesters who are courageously standing up to ICE’s inhumane policies.
We stand united in condemning these unacceptable and appalling actions by ICE. We demand accountability from ICE and federal authorities and call for an immediate end to these brutal enforcement practices. We will not stand by while our communities are attacked and terrorized.
ICE’s continued use of aggressive tactics against non-violent immigrants and those advocating for justice diverts resources away from real public safety threats and creates fear rather than security in our communities.
The public does not support overreaching tactics that threaten the foundation of a free and democratic society. These cruel tactics are not only contrary to American values we hold most dear but also betray the American people’s priorities—to focus immigration enforcement on dangerous criminals, not law-abiding families or individuals exercising their constitutional rights.
We call on all elected leaders to uphold the law, protect civil liberties, and focus enforcement efforts where they are truly needed.
Our communities are strongest when we protect each other, and our fight for justice and dignity for all working people will not be silenced. Now more than ever, we reaffirm our commitment to defending the rights of immigrants, fighting back against racist policies that deprive our communities of living with dignity. California—and our nation—must live up to its promise where every worker is respected, protected, and free.
We will not be intimidated. We will not be silenced. We will organize and continue to respond with urgency, unity, and resilience. We will speak out, and we will rise together.
