RESOLUTION 2

Resolution to Support Kamehameha Schools and Oppose Attempts to End Preferential Admissions for Native Hawaiians

Whereas, the Kamehameha Schools were established in 1887 through the will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop to provide education for children of Native Hawaiian ancestry; and

Whereas, the U.S. government overthrew the sovereign kingdom of Hawai‘i in 1893, banned the use of the Native Hawaiian language in schools for many decades, and claimed Hawai ‘i as a U.S. territory.

Whereas, the Kamehameha Schools' admissions policy that prioritizes access to these private charter schools for Native Hawaiian students has been instrumental in addressing historical injustices, cultural preservation, and the educational needs of the Native Hawaiian community for more than a century; and

Whereas, the Students for Fair Admissions (FAIR) organization has challenged this policy, arguing it is discriminatory; and

Whereas, ending preferential admissions would undermine the Schools' mission to serve Native Hawaiian students and negatively impact the community's educational and cultural advancement;

Therefore, be it resolved that the SEIU API Caucus and the SEIU Pacific Islander Council opposes any attempts by FAIR or similar entities to end the long-standing policy of providing preferential admissions to students of Native Hawaiian ancestry at the Kamehameha Schools.

Be it further resolved we recognize the importance of preserving cultural identity and addressing historical inequities through targeted educational opportunities.

Be it further resolved that we urge the preservation of the Kamehameha Schools' admissions policy as a vital component of Native Hawaiian self-determination and cultural preservation.
